About

I am a veteran high school ELA teacher and former foster parent of 93, a mother. and a widow. I am an avid Scrabbler.

My sole podcast can be found at https://anchor.fm/rachel-1969

My older daughter, whom we adopted from foster care, suffered the stillbirth of her anencephalic daughter in April of 2016. She has bravely shared her story.

The second most read story on this site is the story of her daughter’s birth: https://cynicalchristianlikeyou.wordpress.com/2016/04/15/the-worst-best-day/

My younger daughter is now in grad school.

My husband of 30 years had a bone marrow transplant for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 2001. He subsequently got Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma from the treatment of his first cancer, then another OSCC. In 2019, he had two heart surgeries. We taught at the same high school.

To chronologically follow the story God’s work in all of our lives, start at https://cynicalchristianlikeyou.wordpress.com/2016/01/29/on-the-waving-of-the-checkered-flag/ and read forward.

Finally, an essay that every woman should read is CJ Hauser’s “The Crane Wife.”  https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2019/07/16/the-crane-wife/

If you know Eric Church personally, please thank him for saving my life with his music.

  1. How can I post a story? My daughter suffered a fatty liver pregnancy, which is rare and we lost our sweet Michael at 36 weeks. It is rare, but some of your followers might gain from our story…

    1. It is easy to sign up for a blog and start one; then other users can link to yours. You have to approve the links.

I am so sorry that you have had to go through this heartache.

  2. Rachel I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your blogs. I have been going back and reading them. They touch me spiritually, emotionally, and have a visceral presence as well. Thank you for sharing. I know that the holidays are often not easy in the best of times and your family has certainly not been there. I will hold you, Anne, and all of you in my heart in the days and weeks to come. You can (912 337 9137) call me or reach out any time you need. Glad you have an army of supporters that have your back. Be blessed and feel the love of so many during this time. God bless you my friend.
